The breathtaking beauty of pearls The pearls of Hyderabad come in a breathtaking variety of shapes and sizes. From the classical serenity of the Jafna pearls to the unique rice pearls - the jewellery of Hyderabad is arguably the most spectacular in this part of the world. Tips on pearl care.... * Do not store pearls in an air-tight environment as they need to 'breathe'. Not even in safe deposits boxes. * Store them away from sunlight and dry heat. * Keep them out of the reach of sprays and perfumes as contact with these, discolours them. * As exposure to perspiration dims the lusture of pearls wipe them with a soft dry cloth after every use. * String your pearls in silken or nylon thread. Avoid gold as it wears them out. * Re-string your pearls every year as the threads weaken with time. Bangles with shimmering colours The famous Hyderabadi stone-studded lac bangles were introduced as a craft to the Deccan in the 16th century by travelling mendicants (hakims), whose wives made bangles by studding lac or shellac bases with multicoloured stones.
